Largely unchanged apart from the colour – you can choose from pastel pink, dark blue, red and the OG white and green – the Stan Smith is the most practical of all the styles in this collection. Again, you find a perforated “R” on the side-foot replacing the signature three stripes, but this season they have also gone a step further, adding Raf’s mug shot to the tongue.
From the tennis court we move to the poolside, with another new style for SS15. It seems that the socks and sandals look is having something of a renaissance. During our time in Paris we spotted similar sandals in a range of showrooms, including some luxury versions from Valentino. Not wanting to miss out, Raf has produced his own versions of the adilette Slide with a woven-effect strap and leather fob detailing on certain colours.
The final new addition to this collection comes straight from the Raf Simons SS15 runway. If you were following our live Instagram #PFW coverage you might have already spotted our teaser video of the illuminated footwear. Built around adidas’s Platform Strap, this unique boot features photoluminescent sections at the heel and side-foot that flash intermittently when the sole strikes the ground.
Alongside the new additions, the collection includes improved versions of previous favourites, the Response Trail 2 and Ozweego 2. Both shoes continue the shoe-in-shoe concept that has defined this collaboration, but this time the former comes in a sleek all-black colourway, while the latter makes use of bright red and blue shades.
The final style is the unusual adidas Bounce. While the AW14 versions of this sneaker came in a range of dark camouflage patterns, these new styles make use of the Japanese-inspired print motifs that feature centrally in the Raf Simons mainline collection.
We were told that these Japanese prints were Raf’s way of saying thank you to Japan – a country that has enthusiastically supported him throughout his career. If this collaboration with adidas continues to improve season-on-season then Raf will certainly need to create a German-themed mainline collection in the near future.
