There have always been a variety of ways to wear the dinner jacket; back in the 1930s they came single and double breasted, with peak, shawl and notch lapels, as two-piece or three-piece suits, in silk, velvet or barathea wool, and in black, cream, midnight blue, bottle green, burgundy and even tartan. Invented in the 19th century by Savile Row tailor Henry Poole & Co at the behest of the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), who wanted “a short celestial blue evening coat to be worn at informal dinners at Sandringham”, the tux was always intended to be a relaxed garment. Because it is now the most formal dress code still in existence, and because it’s tainted by its association with stiff corporate award ceremonies, it’s easy to forget that it was invented for men to wear while they ate, drank and made merry down in the country.
