Mike Skinner and Dr. Martens celebrate “the last, genuinely misunderstood, post-war sub-culture”, with this new short film exploring the history and origins of the first generation skinheads.
“The boiled eggs, the lemons, the prickles and the peanuts”, narrates Mike Skinner, in typically lyrical style. “They would soon get a name that stuck: the skinhead.”
Providing background to the much maligned movement, Skinner leads the skinhead revival with this crash course in the social and cultural heritage of the group’s first generation.
“They are the last, genuinely misunderstood, post-war sub-culture, but the first to actually influence the sound of British black music”, says Skinner, who himself is the embodiment of the joyful mingling of black and white British sub-cultures.
“They are still influencing kids today with what to listen to and wear: the boots, the braces, scooters, race, music and football – the spirit of ‘69”.
